Overdetermined problems with possibly degenerate ellipticity, a geometric approach

چکیده
Given an open bounded connected subset Ω of R, we consider the overdetermined boundary value problem obtained by adding both zero Dirichlet and constant Neumann boundary data to the elliptic equation −div(A(|∇u|)∇u) = 1 in Ω. We prove that, if this problem admits a solution in a suitable weak sense, then Ω is a ball. This is obtained under fairly general assumptions on Ω and A. In particular, A may be degenerate and no growth condition is required. Our method of proof is quite simple. It relies on a maximum principle for a suitable P -function, combined with some geometric arguments involving the mean curvature of ∂Ω.

No geometric approach for general overdetermined elliptic problems with nonconstant source
We discuss the geometric approach developed in [8] for the study of overdetermined boundary value problems for general elliptic operators. We show that this approach does not apply when nonconstant sources are involved.

We modify and extend proofs of Serrin’s symmetry result for overdetermined boundary value problems from the Laplace-operator to a general quasilinear operator and remove a strong ellipticity assumption in [9] and a growth assumption in [5] on the diffusion coefficient A, as well as a starshapedness assumption on Ω in [4]. متن کاملOn the existence of solutions of a class of SDEs with discontinuous drift and singular diffusion*
The classical result by Itô on the existence of strong solutions of stochastic differential equations (SDEs) with Lipschitz coefficients can be extended to the case where the drift is only measurable and bounded. These generalizations are based on techniques presented by Zvonkin and Veretennikov, which rely on the uniform ellipticity of the diffusion coefficient. In this paper we study the case...
